Why Plant New Woodlands?

Planting new woodlands plays a crucial role in mitigating the impacts of climate change. As trees grow, they absorb carbon, helping us meet our net zero targets. Furthermore, when timber is processed into wood products like those used in construction, it continues to store carbon. By establishing well-designed woodlands, you can also enhance the landscape, create new habitats, and contribute to our Forests for the Future project.

Forest Expansion Scheme

The Forest Expansion Scheme encourages landowners to plant sustainable new woodlands of three hectares and larger. Whether you’re interested in conifer species for timber production or native woodlands for enhanced environmental characteristics, this scheme is for you. Successful applicants can receive up to 100% of the establishment costs and annual premium payments for a 10-year period.

The benefits of participating in this forestry grant scheme extend beyond financial support. Landowners can expect a commercial return on their investment, while also contributing to biodiversity, conservation efforts, water quality improvement, and the reduction of agricultural runoff. Furthermore, the scheme promotes carbon sequestration, helping to mitigate climate change.

Small Woodland Grant Scheme

Designed specifically for smaller scale new native woodlands of at least 0.2 hectares, the Small Woodland Grant Scheme provides valuable support to landowners. This forestry grant scheme funds the planting of trees, new stock fencing if required, and annual premium payments over a 10-year period.

The Small Woodland Grant Scheme offers various advantages for landowners interested in establishing new native woodland of 0.20 hectares or more. This scheme provides a fixed area-based payment for woodland establishment, a fencing grant, and, where eligible, annual premia for a 10-year period. Landowners retain ownership of the land and can still include it in the claim for the Single Farm Payment.

Annual Premia

This is an area based payment of £3,500/ha (10 annual payments
x £350/ha) for woodland creation on agricultural land. The grant
is eligible in Years 1-10. These are payments for income
foregone to cover loss of income compared to agricultural
production for a maximum period of ten years. The grant rate
may be subject to a periodic review.
